About Debi

Deborah Jo “Debi” Kozlowski was born in Gainesville, FL in 1960 to deeply southern parents. She grew up in Wayne, MI, from ages 4 to 14.  Her father was a Church of Christ preacher who later became a well-known Bible scholar famous for his study guides on the whole Bible and more than 15 commentaries on books of the Bible. At age 14 her family – Mom, Dad and two younger brothers – moved back to the south.  She graduated from Banks High in Birmingham, AL.  Her senior year she played Nellie, the lead, in South Pacific and was awarded Outstanding Senior Vocalist and Best Actress.

In 1978, she went to a tiny private Christian college (Florida College, Temple Terrace, FL) for her first two years, where she was in plays, was a cheerleader for basketball, sang in the music group “Friends,” and came in second at the National Forensics Championships in Duet Acting.  She transferred to Western Kentucky University in 1980, graduating with a degree in Speech and Theatre with a strong English minor.  Her passion for natural beauty led her to load up her ’68 Dodge Coronet 440 and move to Longmont, Colorado.

Her first job was teaching English and Speech at Longmont High.  When she stepped out of her classroom, the windows running the length of the hallway were full of snow-covered mountains.  She spent her free time hiking in the Rocky Mountain National Park, which was just up into the hills from Longmont. After her second year of teaching, she was one of 30 teachers in the state of CO to attend “Writing About Literature,” an institute sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities.  There she met her first husband, Gary Cale, and after teaching part-time in Colorado Springs (and enjoying the mountains again), they moved to Jackson, MI in 1988.
